Haldighati Battle
The Battle of Haldighati was fought on 18 June 1576 between Maharana Pratap and Akbar's forces led by Man Singh I of Amer. In 1572 Maharana Pratap was crowned as king. At that time, most part of Mewar was lost to Moghuls. But still some areas Mountain areas were ruled by Maharana Pratap. Moghul Empire Akbar wanted a permanent route through mewar to Gujrat for trading and other purposes. So Akbar offered Maharana Pratap to become a Vassal like other Rajputs in the region. But Maharana Pratap dropped the proposal immediate. It led to the Haldighat Battle.
The battle took place at a narrow mountain pass at Haldighati near Gogunda (today Rajsamand in Rajasthan). Maharana Pratap had 3000 cavalry and 400 Bhil archers where as Mughals led by Man Singh of Amber had 5000 to 10000 army. After a fierce battle lasting more than three hours, Maharana found himself wonded. But still mughals failed to capture him. He managed to escape to the hills. Haldighati was a futile victory for the Mughals, as they were unable to capture Maharana Pratap, or any of his close family members in Udaipur. As soon as the empire's focus shifted north-west, Pratap and his army came out of hiding and recaptured the western regions of his dominion.
Still today people remember him for his bravery, courageous soul and true fighter who decided to fight against Moghuls rather surrender in front of them. He is immortal in the heart of Hindus.
