In 1904, when Mary Curzon, Baroness Curzon of Kedleston, the wife of the Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon of Kedleston, visited this region, she could not able to see any Rhinoceros. At that point of time, this region was popular for rhinoceros. She asked her husband to take immediate action. On 1 June 1905, the Kaziranga Proposed Reserve Forest was created with an area of 232 kilometer square.

In next couple of years, the park was extended by 152 kilometer square towards the bank of Brahmaputra River. In 1916, park was named Kaziranga Game Sanctuary but unfortunately there were no restriction on hunting until 1938. In 1950 Kaziranga Game Sanctuary was renamed Kaziganga Wildlife Sanctuary by P.D. Stracey, the forest conservationist. In 1968, The Assam State Government passed the Assam National Park Act of 1968 and Kaziranga was declared a designated national park.
